More About Guides: Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. 2007 will be the fifth year of our camp in Texas! The camp is called "Camp Siloam" taken from John 9. We can only accept blind adult campers based on the number of sighted guides that volunteer. Our desire is to see the camp grow, reaching more souls for Jesus Christ! The Lord has allowed me to be the camp director. The camp itself is sponsored by : The Gospel Association
for the Blind If you are chosen as a guide, your week of camp will be paid for by The Gospel Association for the Blind. This amounts to $200 which includes room and board for the camp and most activities. Please continue reading the list of questions below and if you are still interested complete the "guide application form" on this website and return it and someone will contact you to answer any further questions that you may have. 1. Why are guides needed! Probably the best
explanation of this is found in the Scriptures. The last 12 words of the
verse below conveys the reason why guides are needed at our camp! 2. What exactly does a guide do? We assign one or two blind campers to a sighted guide. They will lead the campers to the Chapel services and to the various activities, (all within walking distance). The guide assumes responsibility for his or her campers, helping with choosing the right clothing; getting something to eat or drink; finding something dropped on the floor; locating a bathroom as well as pointing out surroundings which would be interesting to the blind camper. The ultimate goal is to make sure that the camper stays safe through the week of camp. 3. Will I get training for this task? In a word, "Yes!" At the beginning of the week we have a guide meeting where we demonstrate how best to work with the blind. Your questions will be answered there as well as through the week by other experienced guides. 4. How are campers placed with guides? We make every attempt to place campers appropriately by age as well as physical ability of both guide and camper. This is why we have guide forms which need to be completed so we can evaluate your strengths and match them to a camper. The more you can tell us about yourself....the better! Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? 5. What if I cannot participate in a certain activity? Sometimes we have an activity during the week that may require a lot of walking. For instance, in 2006 we went to the Houston Space Center where there was a lot of walking. If you do not feel you can participate, we then readjust campers and guides for that activity. So far, this system has worked well for us! 6. What is the time frame for camp? Guides need to be at the camp Sat. May 12, 2007 as campers arrive also on that day. You will be with your campers 24-7. Camp ends Sat. May 19. 7. What if my camper gets sick? Good question! We have a camp nurse who is in charge of that area! 8. What are the sleeping arrangements? There is a men's dorm and a women's dorm. Your bed would be between your two campers. 9. What are the ages of the campers for the week? To be a camper one should be 18 to 70 years old, but sometimes exceptions are made. 10. Is there anything else I should know or be aware of as a possible guide? Yes! Come to camp with an attitude in your heart that "I want to be a blessing to someone!" We will let you know ahead of time who your campers are going to be and it would be great if you would pray for them before you meet. Isaiah 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. God has blessed us with great guides. Many of our guides are planning to return in 2007. It is an experience you will never forget should you be chosen to guide at our camp! May God bless you. If you would like to be a guide click here to go to the registration form. Bro. George Gray |
